08 Colorado Project

So I have a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado LS Z85 2wd, standard cab that I have as my personal vehicle. As a Safety and Security Officer, I'm often called to perform inspections pertaining to safety and security, and sometimes even checking up on our security guard teams and security patrols. In some of these cases, I'm forced to park my truck where it could be hit, so ergo the strobes. My company offered to pay half of the cost of any strobes installed and my time to install.

Additionally, a lot of the equipment my in truck is a requirement of or aids my work.

Without further ado, the pictures.

Because I still had to pay for half of the strobe product, I opted for the STL Mini Eclipse. The colors are amber and white. Upon perusing the forum, I know STL is likened to garbage, but it suits my application, and because it's not exposed to the elements, SHOULD survive.

However, I would like to go on record and say that I'm not a fan of STL customer service.

Here's my Ram Mounts Tough Box Console, with a non locking tablet cradle for the Blackberry Playbook I have for work. I'm planning on reconfiguring the console with a loudspeaker/siren (main use for loudspeaker) and a series of switches so I can move my switches to a more central location. I also plan on adding some more equipment later that will be switchable.

I wanted more dome light, so I installed this round LED dome. Future plans are to add another dome light that's red placed overtop the console.

Not exactly related, but I have my Ultragauge mounted on the windshield to monitor engine diagnostics and parameters.

Fire Extinguisher and misc gear (shovel, first aid kit, ratchet straps, extension cord, etc.)

And finally I got a amber/White LED Light bar behind the grille. I got the amber wired in with the DRL and the white wired with the switch. There is a strobing module available to make the colors strobe, but I'm using the bar for extra light.

just a few pieces of friendly advice… We do not refer to them as strobes when they are LEDs. Also, you're not getting the maximum output of your eclipse light by having it angled downwards like that (with the downward slope of the dash)

Also, how come all of the warning is to the front? Do you park against traffic? Otherwise, I would think that would make more sense to have the lights mounted to the rear

It's a project. Haven't got around to obtaining side and rear lighting yet.
Then you need to put the warning lights where they will do you the most good, which (again, unless you're parking head-on against the flow of traffic) would be your rear window.

You can get an amplifier with JUST a PA system (no siren function), which sounds like it might be a better option for you.  Unless of course you're doing wide-load escorts and just use it to get through intersections & have family on the local PD, then please go right ahead....

Video of my favorite flash pattern, side to side amber and steady burn white. I get flash back in the cab with the lights on, but I'm not in the truck with them on long enough for it to be a problem. Click to view.

Same pattern, but in the dark. I tried to get far enough back, but the shop I was in was full with cars. Click to view.

I don't end up using my equipment too often on the road, unless there's a security patrol that I need to meet up with. Most often it's just to show that an inspecting official is on site. (And thus, my desire to stay slick top, so I can enter some sites to oversee work before coming out and starting the official inspection.)

Yeah I can also have the whites strobe too. I just prefer the steady burn

I'll get a video tonight of both colors flashing.

Wouldn't it have been better to start with rear lighting, as you said your concern is your vehicle being hit? That's a lot of light for the front of a non emergency vehicle.

There are stand alone PA systems, absolutely no need for a siren.

For the money you spent on the STL stuff you could have bought a good used mini light bar that you could just throw up on the roof when you need it or at least some used lights on here that will last much longer and be a lot brighter.

If your company is truly reimbursing you half of the cost, why don't you get better quality lights? Don't just settle for less performing lights if they are truly being used for your safety.
