Coating on MX7000 domes?

In trying to restore some clear MX domes, I've noticed there seems to be some kind of coating over the actual plastic. I discovered this when wet sanding, and I seem to have just made matters worse. I also have a blue dome bar that I was going to work on next. Does anybody know if the coating is just on the clear ones, or if red, blue, and amber domes are the same? If so, does this mean MX domes are basically unrestorable, or has anybody had success dealing with the coating? It seems like if you have a scratch or gouge in this coating, you're done for. I looked in the lens restoration thread and found mention of the coating, but did not see a method to deal with it.

Thanks for any tips,

Kevin

they offered a "Hard Coating" on their domes for a while , I have sanded it off before but its a pain , I dont think that it realy helped the domes last longer.

The hard coating was available in all colors too. If you look at the flat inboard side of the lens it should have a date tag affixed to it. Clear tag with black numbers. That is the date of manufacture. Code warrantied them for 5 years after that date.

The coating worked well to keep bug splats from sticking and helped to fend off discoloration longer but ultimately would fail after being in the elements continuously.

Ok, thanks everyone for the info. I guess if I start with some mild polish it wouldn't destroy the coating if it is present. The good news is the domes are still available (unlike my Aerodynic dome I burned with my buffer...)

Thanks, Kevin
