I just picked up this Federal Model 17D manufactured in November 1971. Itr was mounted on a 1972 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Ambulance/Hearse. It is in great shape. Mounted it on a leveling board since it has a cut base and placed it next to my 174 that came off of a Superior Coach and has the detachable plate as well.

I assume it was detachable so the hearse could be used without it for more "dignified" service. Very cool light.

Once upon a time, hearses did double duty as ambulances. That was when quick disconnect and de-mountable beacons were most popular. Lights installed for transporting to the hospital, lights removed for transporting to the cemetery.

That's what I was referring too by "more dignified" purposes.
