I'll post a pic of the Johnson this weekend if you're looking, it may be functional but I haven't tested. My Sharp needs a crystal (a favorite), and the Cobra 29 (23 channel) took a direct lightening hit (another fave). I have a Robyn(?) that was in Dad's '77 Olds. The 23 channel stuff getting hard to come across.

Thank you for the offer, but I have a wide variety to choose from. I run a radio repair business. and cb's both 23 and 40 channels , in addition to motorolas and kenwoods, among others, fill up my radio room. yes, they are becoming scarce, I agree with you there...lol

You mentioned your 23 ch. C.B. I bought a nice old Motorola C.B. of ebay a few years ago that I haven't yet hooked up in my '68 Old ambulance. Now that's something that would look neat under your Motorola control head.

If you happen to have one, a Johnson Messenger 123 would be nice for that car, or you could run across, an old "White Face" (actually chrome-faced) Johnson Messenger I, which was an old crystal-controlled radio, would be awesome! Or if you have the space, a Hallicrafter's CB3 or CB3A would be neat, since Hallicrafters was the "grandaddy" of C.B. radio.

No problem... still figuring out who specializes in what here. May request some repair work of you, radio shops are scarce in Maine...

yes, skip, that would look nice, but Honolulu wouldn't EVER put out that kind of money for a cb.Way back when they had cb's in their squads, they would put in a mishmosh of radios, no name stuff...im just going to go with a obscure no name rotary dial unit ,down at the bottom of the pile...

I'm sure they bought a lot from Radio Shack or Lafayette back then, like my old RS TRC23. I even have a nice old Courier 23 base station that I got at a garage sale a few years ago.

well, this past Saturday, I went to wo zha wa, the Wisconsin Dells last big hurrah for the season, and took in Maxwell Street Days, a flea market , that they close off streets for, and it seems like everybodys brother and his dog were in attendance there. I happened to pick up these gems, one I have mounted on the garage wall. above the 77 plymouth fury , and the other one im going to mount in the shop somewhere...MVC-027S.JPG

My colleague Mike at Dakota Guns and Lawman in Bismarck has a bunch of 23-channel CBs. If anybody's interested in getting one or two, I can post his contact info.

A bit of Director and Interceptor history:

The Directors and Interceptors (PA15 and PA20) with the alert tone were in production from about 1962 to 1966.

They were replaced by the PA15A (wail and yelp tones only) and PA20A (wail, yelp, and hi-lo) in 1967.

The high pitched E series PA15As and PA20As were introduced in the early 1970s.

If you're not familiar with PCS, Rick, it's the Professional Car Society. Members buy, sell and collect older hearses and passenger-car-based ambulances: the big Cadillacs, Buicks, Pontiac and Oldsmobile ambulances. Every year in the summer PCS has a national meet in different city each years. This year's was in Milwaukee. Too far for me to make it. The meet lasts for a week and includes tours of interest in the host city and/or surrounding area. In some places they've been allowed to have a full-fledged Code 3 parade, with the ambulances and combination-cars running lights and sirens the whole time. But in others, they have a light and sound show at the end of the meet, as I mention above.

Professional Cars International, based in Southern California, also has some intersting meets, but most of their meets are in the Los Angeles area. Their Summer Meet, which I've been to, features a "Rollin' to the Rescue" Code 3 run, which features old firetrucks, rescues, police cars and ambulances. To be in the parade, the vehicle has to have working lights and sirens. The parade is escorted either by CHP or LAPD and runs about 5 miles roughly..depending on where they start. It all culminates at the big Hansen Dam park, where PCI combines with the American Heroes Airshow, where all LA County emergency agencies have vehicles and equipment on display. Lots of caps, tshirts, etc., for sale. When I was there in 2002, I got to drive the chapter president's (Lou Farah) 1969 hightop Suburban ambulance in the parade. Niiiice!

Rick....the original Interceptors were PA10s and the Directors, PA5s. Both had the Alert function. When Federal revamped them, the Intercetpor became a PA20 and the hi-lo was added. The Director became a PA15 and Alert was dropped.

Nice looking rig. It's 23 ch., I presume? I have two 23 ch. Johnson's. One is the 123 I mentioned and the other is a later models with red LEDs where the S-meter should be. I've got to get around and get one of them hooked up one of these days. I used to never consider going w/o a C.B. but haven't run one now in years!

I'm assuming it's 23 channel... haven't wired it up. From my trucking days, I rarely run trips without one. Presently got a Galaxy DX 949 in my Blazer

I think that the only 40 ch. rig I have is a small Cobra that was given to me at a swapfest a couple of years ago. I think the guy must've run it as a base radio as it has a Turner +2 base mic hooked to it.

I'll take a pic of my other 23 channel CB's tomorrow, didn't look for the mic for the Johnson... just too many boxes to sort through. My Cobra 29 was an awesome radio, really stepped out. Lightening doomed it, truck was struck at loading dock. Was running it on a Ford LTA 9000 with a mag mount antenna... lightening hit antenna (truck was grounded to building with trailer lock) and crystallized magnet, about blew hole clean through truck roof (nasty burnt dimple in sheet metal). Any hope for it? (snicker) :bonk:

Ouch! Something similar happened to me over 40 yrs ago, but with a very old Lafayette base station. When the storm brewed up I unplugged the antenna from the radio and laid the coax and plug on the table between the C.B. and my am/fm radio. Lightening hit my antenna, and by a freak incident, electricity jumped from the plug and knocked a hole in the side of the am/fm radio and also hit the C.B. and fryed it. The impact shooked by bedroom and almost physically knocked me out of bed. I would guess that it would've flat melted the C.B. if I had left the antenna plugged in. Thank goodness my parents' homeowners insurance covered the damage.

Nice, Rick. Is that an old Bearcat III or IV on the rt side of the picture. Can you even get Xtals for them anymore?

that's a bc 4 oh yes, I can crystals for them yet.. I remember my first scanner I got from my father. Him and I went up to Montgomery Wards and picked out a scanner from their vast selection of scanners, C.B's and their music department, which had a wide variety of albums and 45's, after that serious bonding moment, we went to their auto car care center where I picked out 4 brand new cragar wheels for my 1969 GTO. since my birthday was coming up, he told me not to tell my mother about the wheels, it was a birthday gift from my father. OH those were the days....(sigh).. I never did tell my mom.....lol. :D

Where do you get the crystals? I have a small Regency crystal scanner that I got off ebay years ago that I've never found crystals for.

I'm not sure if the old radio still works or not, but if it does....154.40 and 154.145 to start with. It's an 8 ch. radio. Do you still use the Bearcat IV? I wouldn't mind having that one.

Skip, if Rick doesn't have the frequency(s) you need, try scannercrystal.com /tel# 1-845-856-3632. he handles both bearcat & regency crystals. i got some from him a while back and was able to get all the frequencies i was looking for.

yes, Skip I do, having been a gift from my Dad, I keep it still running and whatever repairs I have done in the past to it,as long as im able to keep it going, like the display and the indicator leds going out , the keyboard having been replaced , the internal speaker being replaced, im goin to hold onto it, for sentimental reasons...
