That almost reminds me of the Mac Davis song, "Lubbock in your rearview mirror".  But this one crept up quickly!

Speaking of CHiPs, the motorcycle siren- sound editor concoction or a dubbed-in real unit I don't recognize? They had a mechanical siren affect to them.

I never did like the sounds of the sirens on the two motorcycles, but never knew back then whether they were real or dubbed in like on Emergency!.  But I got to watch part of the show yesterday (they're now on METV at 5:00 central) and it was obvious that at least part of the sound was dubbed, because they had transposed the yelp sound on top of that funky wail on the motorcycle sirens.

Cute. But it's hard to picture Mark Wahlberg in a somewhat comedy role.

Well regardless of authentic or sound effect, siren sounds have to be dubbed-in as the California Vehicle Code does not permit look-alike emergency vehicles to run sirens on public streets

A few years ago I read a thread on this siren (don't remember which forum) and someone said that there was a real motorcycle siren that sounded like that.  It was a small mechanical siren that was amplified and the sound came out of a standard motorcycle siren speaker.  A sort of hybrid mechanical-electronic contraption.  I think the manufacturer name was 'Stewart' or something like that.

Wow...what a collection.  I had almost forgotten about that Lorne Greene show. Used to watch it although it wasn't as good as Emergency! by any means.    Neat shot of the camera on the 2nd motorcycle. Interesting!

Some of those old coaches and vans I've seen in various TV shows and movies.  Back then I had no idea that there were businesses like Joe Ortiz's in SoCal that rented/leased those units to the studios.   Joe has had some health issues of late and now has some of his old ambulances up for sale. Downside is that he won't  quote prices as yet.   The Schaeffer and Goodhew ambulances were well known around the L.A. area, although Goodhew was bought out by AMR a few years ago.   It would be interesting to know where some of these vehicles ended up.

Hello "348",

First of all let me just say that your contributions here are UNBELIEVABLE. So thanks for sharing.

Next... what is with the occasional blue lights you'd see on ambulances from shows set in California? I've posted the same question elsewhere but no one seems to know.

Lastly... is that an "F&B" ambulance (from Mother Jugs & Speed) making an appearance on CHiPs!?

I've often asked the question when seeing blue on CA vehicles on TV and movies. What I've found out is that a majority of the ambulances seen are leased vehicles.   My good friend Joe Ortiz has leased various emergency vehicles to the movie studios for many years including a number of ambulances.  While blue on ambulances wasn't technically allowed in CA, that's a small matter that the studios didn't catch; and unless they wanted to be technically correct right down the line, most often they really didn't care.  That's why on shows like Starsky & Hutch, for instance, you'd see a rotating Fireball-type light in one sequence and a Flashball in the next.   Most, if not all, of Joe's vintage vehicles are usually CA correct.  The funny thing there is that some shows that supposedly occur in New York are actually taped in CA.  If you've ever seen the white-over-yellow Suburban ambulances used mostly on Emergency!, they actually belonged to Snyder Ambulance, and one of those now belongs to my good friend Lou Farah who heads up Professional Cars International.  I saw that same Suburban on a couple of episodes of "Kojak".  Fast trip from CA to NY, huh!

Movie/show production companies rent the vehicles used in their shows, most of the time.  The average viewer has no idea what the light laws are in any given state. If you mention a California Red, they will probably assume you are talking about wine, while you are whining about the accuracy or lack there of!  Blue Bloods has r/b on their cars.  Chicago PD has full paint on the crown vics, no beat tags, and other inaccurate lights.  A lot of shows set in CA are not running California reds anymore.  In the older days, if a light bar had steady burn, it was simply due to the equipment companies not wanting to replace the flashers.

I may have gotten a bit carried away on my photo posts but the more I thought about it, the more shows I wanted to include.  Its a work in progress I find myself adding to occasionally.

I don't have answers to your questions, just educated guesses.  Like Hilo mentioned, I'm guessing some production companies don't pay as much attention to details in some of their vehicles as some viewers do.  In California I usually only see blue domes on law enforcement vehicles but the occasional ambulance in shows like CHiP's had a blue dome on it.  Other vehicles don't meet California specs with the steady burn red light to the front and flashing amber light to the rear.  Purists like us notice some of those minor details.

The F & B Cadillac ambulance on CHiP's does appear to be the same as the one on Mother, Jugs & Speed.  In Mother, Jugs & Speed the ambulance has a set of steer horns mounted above the windshield.  The horns are not there in the CHiP's photo.  I've tried to look at pictures to see if the cars have the same license plates, but I can't get a clear enough picture to tell for sure.  If I had to guess I would say its the same vehicle.

I got to watch "Lone Wolf McQuade" all the way through last night for the first time in a very long time.  In response to some comments about the beacons on McQuade's Dodge RAM, both beacons appear to be 17s. I got a good look at them on my new wide-screen TV this time.  The right beacon has a traditional Federal name tag, but the one on the driver's side appears to be one of the Federal Laboratories' tags.  Federal Labs' lights and sirens were all built in the Federal plants either in Chicago or Blue Island but had their own model numbers.  The beacons on the TX DPS unit appear to be Sirenos.
