There's another great looking classic apparatus!

Is that a Federal Model WL siren on the front....the one in the center with the red light?

Also, I see the beacon is a "high skirt". Were high skirt beacons for fire trucks and the smaller skirt beacons for police?

PS I like the nuke power plant background in pic 1

That 174 appears to have a standard skirt. Shorter skirts started out as standard height, but were cut down by the purchaser. The cut was often to make the base of the skirt match the profile of the vehicle roof.

Here is my 1944 Chevy WWII model 325 fire truck. This pic was taken a couple years ago the day it was delivered to me. It is now in my garage, disassembled so I can turn it back to olive drab.

Love that 1954 American Lafrance and the 1944 WW2 fire truck, awesome with those beacon rays and everything else it has.

Here is our 1954 American LaFrance 700 Series Spartan 1000GPM Pumper. Lighting includes Federal 174 Super Beacon Ray on top, Federal 15A Junior Beacon Rays on rear. Sirens include Sterling Model 30 Sirenlight, Federal Q2B, SVP Electronic siren with hidden speaker.

If it were my truck I'd get rid of the Q2b and the electronic siren and replace the 174 Super Beacon Ray with an early Beacon Ray model 17. The Sterling Model 30 siren is fine where it is.

Pimp, not sure they have a whelen tag on them but the rest of the plate is faded. I will try to get some close up pics of them along with video. They are cool lights though!

heres another shot of mine. Lighting includes deitz 4 bulb beacons, mars 888. i added the sentrys in the back and a HL flasher. Since this pic i put the Q in the nose where is belongs and moved the siren speaker to where the bell used to be

Sold the Chevy military Pickup I had posted before and bought a 1984 Military M1009 Blazer to replace it. Put the same Federal Signal AeroDynic on the Blazer and added some old Whelen 900 strobes as well. Still have the Chevy Military M1010 ambulance, but the lightbar is the same one I moved to the Blazer.

I don't really have the time/space for it anymore, but here's my '87 Fury - I was going to make a NYPD clone out of it. It IS an AHB car that was originally a Dayton, OH PD car. I haven't worked on it in over a year & its' sitting out in the weeds... :?
This is a couple weeks after I got it in '07 before I moved it:

DAMN! I haven't seen a Dayton blue & white forever!

That looks awesome, man! I noticed in your video you switched the pattern around for the Areo. From right-arrow to the alternating inside-out, correct? The bar and strobes fit that truck very well for that year.

Thanks, yes I changed the flash pattern as the arrow pattern was too boring. I still want to move the timing of the two center so they will flash just after the driver side goes by and not in the same line.

I like the Willy's! Very cool stash of trucks, EngCo4!

Wife now wants a Chief's Car! Working on it. Maybe in service next year.

Everyone around here like the Seagrave. Has a Detroit 2 - stroke and is LOUD! :D

I guess it's my turn...

I've personally owned three restored replicas, and helped out with at least three others.

My first was this 66 Plymouth Fury I, representing NYSP. Fully accurate including period vintage GE radios and an NOS Dietz 211-WW.

aimages29.fotki.com_v1005_photos_4_41561_3491644_July262007004_vi.jpg

Second up is a 76 Plymouth Gran Fury, an original package car with a 440 U code motor. It too was restored to represent an NYSP unit. Again, period correct GE radios, a Unitrol 800 and a pair of new Unity RV-26s on the roof. The only thing I couldn't find were the Spitfire domes for the roof lights.

Both of these cars have been sold to retired NYSP Troopers.

My current car (which happens to be for sale) is my 1973 Dodge Polara restored as a replica of my departments cruiser from that year. And that's a Federal 174 up top, mounted on an NOS Unity Uni-rack with a pair of Unity Stratolites on the ends.

aimages53.fotki.com_v1578_photos_4_41561_6026469_DSC00911_vi.jpg

My department own this 1963 Pontiac Catalina restored as a replica of our 63 cars. It should have a 174 on it, but couldn't find a good one, so it has a 176.

[Broken External Image]:http://images52.fotki.com/v1564/photos/1/41561/7559368/IMG_4298-vi.jpg

One more for all of you Whelen fans...

This is a squad I just recently assisted with. Its owned by another memeber of my department. Starting in 1973, we began using a pair of Whelen Model 5000 Commanders on a Mars bar, along with a pair of Unity S-6 spots and a small center speaker. I have an original rack awaiting restoration. However, I was able to put this one together using another pair of Commanders and a Federal crossbar. This is definitely an unusual set up, but we used it from late 73 to 1983.

The car is a 1981 Plymouth Gran Fury, package car that originally was in service with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Also notice that the Dart in the first photo has a single strobe in the center. That light is not a Whelen. It is a a light made by Strobe Champion of Long Island NY. I can't find any details about that company, but I do have the light. It powers up and fires a strobe burst, but the strobe tube must be shot, since it doesn't light up.

i remeber seeing that car at the nypd museum show. i was hoping to see that bar in action

Did Seagrave still make open cab pumpers of that style in the late 1960s?

What make and model of siren was used in those cars?

The Seagrave conventional cab (both open cab and closed cab)

"Anniversary Series" was produced from 1950 - 1970. After that

only cab forward apparatus were built unless on a commercial

chassis.

The Anniversary Series were mainly produced with gasoline motors

but some were built with Detroit Diesels. Many were repowered

in the late 60s and early 70s with diesels as they were more

reliable and efficient for fire apparatus. Detriot'-Allison was the

primary provider of diesel engines in this era but Seagrave did

build apparatus with other makes of engines if specified. I know

of one Anniversary Series ladder truck that was produced with a

Cummins Diesel from the factory and Seagrave even badged the

truck with the Cummins logo! (My pumper was originally produced

with a Seagrave 530ci V-12 gasoline motor with dual magneto

ignition. It was repowered in 1976 with a Detroit Diesel.)

I knew the ladder truck from both the original FD that bought and

operated it and the 2nd FD that had it. It is now in private hands and is

presently for sale. It still has all of its ladders and over 90% of its

original equipment. And it still runs just fine! It is a tiller-drawn

ladder truck.

Cab forward apparatus later replaced the Anniversary Series, but

Seagrave was producing cab forwards beginning in the early 60s

in both open and closed cab models.

The urban riots and civil disturbances of the late 60s and early 70s

spelled the end for open cab apparatus. According to my research,

the last open cab appratus was produced in 1982 by American

LaFrance. I have a photo of it, but no FD listed for it. It was built

with a Century Cab.

While the 1970s broought about the exclusive use of enclosed cabs

of various forms, (both 'canopy' cabs with the open rear but sheltered

on three sides, and the fully enclosed cabs with weather-tight cabs

and crew doors) enclosed apparatus has been around since the early

1930s. Seagrave pioneered their "Safety Sedan" which not only had

an enclosed crew area, but actually enclosed the ENTIRE apparatus

incuding the pump panel, hose bed and tools storage!

Chicago FD has one of these that they have completely restored from

the frame up for ceremonial use. They operated several back in the day

as did other major FDs such as FDNY, DCFD, Chicago FD and others.

Emergency lighting varied over the years and also to customer specs.

Normal lighting/warning was either a Federal or Sterling siren/light

combination mounted in the unique nose nacelle of the Anniversary

Series apparatus with anything from a Roto-Ray to a Beacon on the

roof. Chicago FD equipped their apparatus at the time with the unique

Mars "football" oscillating light on the roof.

Hope this information is helpful.
