I knew of this yesterday. Was waiting until Friday to buy & share the news here (Unity is doing a Black Friday sale). I guess I'll be buying now before the chance is lost. :-(

To unityrv26, sorry to hear about your bogus dome. I wonder if it came from the same guy I got my bogus dome from. Looked more pink than red. Had crooked lines, too.

Could be!  It is more pink than red, the lines are crooked, jagged and had a very poor taping job.  There are scratches where their paint job came off from I assume bumping the dome around the bulb housings.  The pics on the auction were very good pics and very misleading.  I will take some pics tomorrow and post them.  The rest of the light is fine and in great shape.

Unity now has an official account here and we are in the process of setting them up a forum section.  Stay tuned for more about what 2016 has in store for Unity soon.

I remember talking to someone from Unity about MSP lights and Unity could not get the red lacquer used to make spitfire domes. My opinion was the red was on the pink side. Maybe it faded over time. I had a blue spitfire for an RV-25. I traded it away. Regret. I landed a RV-26 recently with an Amber dome for under $50. bucks. I had purchased a new blue and red dome for the 26s for cheap.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a NA Signal Stratolite 80 dome in clear and using some painter's tape and Krylon stained glass paint in transparent blue and red to make one of these. A "poor man's" bicentennial version if you will :D.

This is probably very doable, I have played with this stuff previously and painting Par36 bulbs.. Good luck and post pictures if successful.

I will certainly try this in the coming spring when it gets warm enough to spray paint outside again. I don't have access to a nice, warm shop to tackle this idea.

I'm bookmarking this post so it's a reminder for me to share my attempt when the time arrives!

Yep, I noticed that too. It may just be an amber dome with transparent red paint. That's how Dietz made their split color domes.

Finally got around to making my own one of these. With lots of trial and error, I finally got a paint that is transparent (see through). Matches perfect to the old unity red/blue paints

That looks good, man! I know I said I'd try to do something similar, but life and such got in the way to put it on the back burner. What kind of paint worked for you, Bamh5?

I had a local paint shop mix me up some. You have to use a candy paint, its the only kind of paint that can be spread thin so that it is see through.

I'll second that: I'd be interested if you make some to sell. Alternatively, how about posting a tutorial for how you made them--how to get the lines perfectly straight, where to get the right paint, tips to get the paint on evenly, etc. I see potential for lots of interesting "homebrew" light combinations that were never commercially offered!

I will be making a few more in the next couple weeks. Please pm me for prices.

As far as how i made the dome...i measured where the spitfire lines would be from my factory spitfires i have. I then took a string and tied it around the dome at the exact hight needed. I then ran the tape on the inside of the dome matching where my string was.
I then painted the blue first, let it cure for a couple days and then painted the red. This involved lots of plastic and tape to avoid overspray of different colors.

I just received one of bamh5 repro domes... very very well made.
Get's my seal of approval ;)

Now make a Green one! lol
