Want to build a set of S&M / TRIO style can lights

I have assumed the body of these was sheet metal, but as it looks like I will be fudging this, I'm thinking a section of aluminum pipe, turned on the lathe might be easier and more durable long term. That would be stiff enough to make a good solid mount as well.

    S&W model L-31D

Neat light by the way, and not one I'm the least bit familiar with. I'm guessing late 1970s as that is when S&W become interested in marketing their own line of (rebadged) emergency lights.

    S&W model L-31D

I only mention this because it occurs to me that LEDs have now been around long enough that there are people who have never been around strobes. If you are not one of these people disregard. High power strobe units, like those used in warning light have a high pitched whine while they charge...

Want to build a set of S&M / TRIO style can lights

I need a set of can lights for my fire engine, but there is no way I am going to spend the going rate for a set of original lights. They are a fairly simple design so want to try my hand at making a set. I have some metal working tools and know some people who do sheet metal work professionally...

    KD Lamp 888

My Dad has a 1952 GMC that is 6v, I have a 1958 Dodge that is 12v, so 12v was introduced sometime between those two years. Neat light, I wasn't even aware of the K-D lamp company.

    Timeline of equipment

Yes that does, thank you. Confusing when a company has subdivisions within its products of the same industry. Very weird, I have the full date of 1951 which suggests I had some fairly substantial information on it. When I'm guessing I just list the assumed decade with an x for the year. I've...

    Timeline of equipment

It is hard enough trying to find intro dates, availability can linger on for quite sometime after production officially ends. Sometimes catalogs which seem one of the more reliable sources for introduction, can drop older items with shrinking sales although the item remains available for...

    Timeline of equipment

stansdds it looks like I missed a bunch of your list. I don't know if you've added to it or I just spaced. That was a lot of info and I may have taken it in chunks and not picked it back up at some point. I do have some questions though. I could use some clarification on Force 4, these were a...

    Timeline of equipment

Maybe special order vs off the shelf (and then receiving its own ID)? I'll look into this as I get time. Maybe my local library can do an transfer, otherwise Berkeley and Sacramento are about 2 hours away, so not out of the question.

    Timeline of equipment

Thanks to Tony for updating the list in the first post for me. I created a new section to separate light bars from beacons and other lights. There is info posted that I didn't include in the update to Tony. In a few cases people have provided very in depth information that I feel is a bit to...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

I don't do that below zero thing... I have a photo from 1973 of the engine in service with a local fire department which would have been soon after being surplussed from the Forest Service. The beacon is there in the photo, so even if I take it off I'll probably keep it since it does...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

Yep, my primary focus has been rust seek and destroy. The weather hasn't been cooperative though, this week was the first in a long time that wasn't mostly rain.

Look what I found at the city shop

Unfortunately it often costs agencies more to send stuff to auction than to let it sit or just scrap it.

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

Is that what they called an air over hydraulic brake system? I've heard and read about them, but never seen one in the wild. :) This truck doesn't have that, but it does have a Mico-lock, sort of an auxiliary parking brake that I've gotten mixed reviews on from people who have used them.

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

No the air horn with the related compressor and tank is an add on. The truck is only 20,000gvw (basically same class as a Ford F550) and is equipped with hydraulic brakes. Grover sells air horns systems like this for non-air brake equipped light and medium duty vehicles that want a more...

    Skip Goulet has passed

I'm sorry to read this. He seemed a nice guy and he had a lot of interesting tales from days long since passed.

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

I've gotten under the truck, and found the compressor and air tank, I suspect both will need replacement. The tank is quite rusty. The airhorn and airlines don't look bad, the lines are copper and I'm guessing the horn is stainless steel. It looks like Grover does sell a compressor and tank, so...

Can you identify this Unity light?

Thank you, nice to know they are still available or a close variant anyway. There is no switch or hole for a missing switch that I can see. It also doesn't seem to have had the little knob on the back. The truck is a 1958 so this light is potentially of the same age.

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

I am planning on documenting the restoration, but hope people are patient as I am doing as much of the work as I can myself. There are some things that I will have to hire out though, paint being the big one when that time comes, lots of work before I get there though. I put a battery in the...

Can you identify this Unity light?

This is a rear light on a fire engine I bought. It is a Unity but not sure which model. I think it is missing a part as there is a screw hole on the top. There would have been two of these but the second is missing, so I'll need to match this one. Thanks

Bought a Fire Truck & looking for help with Force 4

Nice truck, one of my favorite body styles. I've worked off of 3 similar but slightly later K35s with the square headlights (80-84?), one rescue, one hazmat and one brush truck. All were good trucks, but 2 of them had a 454 so had trouble passing a gas station. ;)

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

Glad to hear the C5G is not as hard to find / costly as I had assumed. I've wanted a fire engine for quite some time, and semi-seriously been looking for about 15 years. I'm very fussy, I wanted something directly related to my career, a truck I'd worked on, or at least one from a department...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

I could potentially make myself a set of can lights that would look the part even if not 100% correct. I have a lathe and other metal working tools, they don't look very complex. I would think the end clamps are probably available from a currently available light. The siren is probably going...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

Anyway, I could use some help identifying some of this equipment, tips for rehabing what can be saved, and general estimate on the cost of the missing / damaged equipment so I know what reasonable prices are vs dreamer prices. As the photos show, I have a lot of rust to contend with so I have...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

The siren mount is still on the fender, but the siren is gone. I believe it would have been a Federal C5G. CAM and B&M were also popular on Forest Service trucks around this time, so I do have options, although I'd prefer the C5G (assuming that is the correct model shown in the photo from my...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

Starting on the roof Dietz 7-11 beacon, this was obviously added later since these are from the late 60s or early 1970s. I'm mixed on the beacon, I kind of like the look of the off set beacon, but it was obviously added much later. Grover airhorn, do these vary or are they all the same? I...

I bought a fire engine, need help with warning equipment

I bought a fire engine and could use some help identifying some bits, and getting information on others as far as saving / replacing, cost etc. Some included just because it is sort of a collection and this place is about showing this kind of thing. The engine is an ex US Forest Service 1958...

Do you own a Sireno ?

I started a general emergency equipment timeline in 2015, there might be some info there of use to you, and I'd appreciate info on Sireno to update my list. Mine is just a general list, not intended to include the level of detail a specific brand listing will want to have that capture small...

Apparently due to the length of time since my last update, only mods can edit the first post, Tony P has agreed to make the updates for me. I am going through all the posts since the last update and will forward them to Tony for posting when I have completed them.

    Timeline of equipment

Sorry for my lack of updates, 2017 and much of 2018 have been extraordinarily hectic. Life seems to be mellowing out as we roll into 2019. I'm locked of of editing, but have sent a message to the admins to see about unlocking that for me. Nice to see there has been continued interest.
