I have two questions regarding attaching badge/front piece to helmets. I have Cairns 5A and N5A (leather New Yorkers) in my collection. Some didn't come with a badge, so I've been collecting some badges as well. My questions are:
1. How do do I attach the badge to the 5A helmet (no impact cap)? These helmets don't have the bolts coming out the front that the badge can be attached to.

2. The N5A helmets do have bolts coming out of the front of the helmet. Some of the badges have holes that are big enough for the bolts. Some badges have very small holes that are too small for the bolts. How do I make the holes larger...can I just drill them out, or will that destroy the badge?

Thank you for the help.

You might be able to drill them, as long as you do it carefully. Otherwise you could get a leather punch. As for the helmet w/o the bolts, does it have the holes for them? I believe you can get replacement bolts from MSA.

No, the older (5A) helmets don't have holes for bolts. Some of them have very small diameter holes (less than 1/32" diameter).

Goo gone should get rid of the leftover glue from the tets that were on there.

Would you use that on a leather as well, or might that damage the leather? I've got some residue on my N5A from when I replaced the tets.

I used it on my N5A and didn't have any issues. Just use a little at a time, don't pour it on.

10-4. Thanks for the advice!

This is my N5A that I have been using for over 15 years and was just forced to retire because we adopted the 10 year rule. It was replaced with a brand new N6A. Then my Ben 2 also now retired and my N5A next to my old 5A.

The old 5A had little gold pins that went threw the shield and bent over inside the helmet, then some went to a plastic screw and bolt like the old 880's

Something to point out... You should get new bourkes. New lid color needs to have new bourkes burned up with it. And I know y'all burn enough down there.

Serious question: why even leave those bourkes on there in that state? They can't possibly serve any functional purpose at this point?

It's a pride thing. A lot of that in PG. I saw that at both PG firehouses I visited. It was definitely a different atmosphere than I was used to, but I loved it. And if your wondering which ones, we visited 33's and my buddy works at 10's, so we did a ride along and spent the night.

those that are collectors that may be close enough to the fire stores retail location, they have a box of leather shields that appear to have been ordered and not picked up or returned,i was there last week and they have a clearance box full of about 100 shields and only asking a few bucks each for them

My New Yorker. I am going on 19 years. I think I had 4 helmets before this one. I bought this one new. It used to have a Captains shield on it. I gave that up

Has anyone ever seen green reflexite tets? I thought they existed but I can't find them anywhere. They make the shamrocks so the material exists.

This is my New Yorker. I had to repaint it yellow from the original black. A few years later I had to repaint it to red, kept the flag paint job on the bottom.

I know you can get them precut in scotchlite, but I'm not sure if you can get it in reflexite, like these tets:

I really dig the flag on the bottom. Did you do that yourself?
